Caring for elderly parents at home a sensible move Feb. 25th, 2004
That is why individual Canadian must be encourage to shoulder more of the load. But Ottawa and the provinces
can offer a helping hand to encourage adult children to look after elderly parents at home. One way would be
to offer tax breaks or direct grants to help families offset the added costs of caring for their elderly parents.
And since tax reform in Ottawa seems so slow, Victoria should play a leading role here. Municipalities could also
offer incentives such as a break on property taxes. With more elderly parents living with their adult children,
BC's health care costs would also be reduced.
No simple solution to who should care for elderly Feb. 29th, 2004
I totally agree with your editorial regarding letting elderly parents stay at home instead of passing them off to an institution. It keeps them in a safer and more familiar environment for them and allows them to age gracefully. But, in the day and age we live in everything is a lot more hectic. Often, both parents work, leaving very little time to aid an elderly person. And children have full schedules with school and extra curricular activities. Where does it leave the elderly? Sitting at home by themselves?
One solution to this is a foreign live in caregiver. I own a placement agency that specialize in placement of this type of placement and most of our customers are the children paying the wages for their parents care. It allows families to spend quality time together while the elderly parents stay safe and have the assistance they need, anytime.
This is the perfect merger to combine peace of mind for the elderly parents, and efficiency for the working children.
